Paulien Bekker couldn’t be more obsessed with atypical or undervalued tangible ‘mundane’ materials, such as fibre and soap. Her works represent the faint remains of the former (hi)story of the matter stratigraphically. She is interested in the unseen ‘underwriting’, which could possibly be unraveled. By physical intervention, to cut, to melt to erase, she aims to activate this substance, untill it starts to reveal itself. Constantly seeking for a friction between the artist and the medium, she strives to bring up new questions, expanding her research continuously.
